Q. What is Avista Corp.’s business focus?

Avista's primary non-regulated business has established a leadership position in the development of facility and information management.


Q. How is Avista Corp. structured?

A. Avista Corp. is an energy company whose utility and subsidiary operations focus on delivering superior products and providing innovative solutions to business and residential customers throughout North America.

Avista Corp. is the parent company for a number of affiliates, including Avista Utilities, which operates the company's electric and natural gas generation, transmission and distribution business. The primary non-regulated subsidiary is Advantage IQ (formerly Avista Advantage).


Q. Did Avista Corp. buy or merge with Washington Water Power?

A. No. On January 1, 1999, Washington Water Power changed its name to Avista Corp., a change that created a cohesive identity for a company that had already become nationally known through several of its subsidiary companies.

The name change was designed to position Avista and its subsidiaries under one common brand to provide flexibility beyond Washington Water Power's utility identity and the limits of its geographic location.


Q. What does Avista mean?

A. The name Avista is derived from the root word "vista," meaning a "distant view or perspective; an extensive mental view as over a stretch of time or a series of events." The name Avista supports the positioning of a company that has a different and far-reaching perspective on delivering quality and value to all its stakeholders.


Q. When was Avista founded?

A. Avista was founded on March 13, 1889, in Spokane, Washington, by ten enterprising men who saw the potential of one of the Northwest's most abundant natural resources — moving water. It was upon this resource that the company was built, developed its long-standing position as a low-cost provider of energy, and helped a region grow.


Q. What are Avista’s utility operations?

A. Avista Utilities has been providing reliable, efficient and competitively priced energy to customers for nearly 120 years. Avista Utilities' primary market area covers more than 30,000 square miles, with energy generation, transmission, and distribution facilities in four Western states. The company serves more than 335,000 electric customers in eastern Washington and northern Idaho, and provides natural gas service to over 304,000 customers in eastern Washington, northern Idaho and throughout Oregon.


Q. Does Avista own any generating plants?

A. Yes. Avista Utilities' diverse generation system allows the company to achieve energy production costs that are consistently among the nation's most competitive. The system includes eight hydroelectric generating plants on two rivers, and coal, natural gas, and wood-waste combustion plants in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana.

Avista is considered one of the premier operators of hydroelectric facilities in the nation, evidenced by its industry-leading plant availability rating of 98 percent. The company's revolutionary approach to hydroelectric project relicensing has been held up as an industry model. In fact, the company has received the National Hydropower Association's Hydro Achievement Award for Stewardship of Water Resources for six straight years as a result of its collaborative approach to relicensing and for accomplishments in river protection and enhancement. Avista Utilities has added nearly 350 megawatts of generating capacity to its portfolio in the past four years - through hydro upgrades, the addition of natural gas-fired combustion turbines, and with the completion of the 280-megawatt Coyote Springs 2 gas-fired project.
